What this mama wants this Valentines Day! (It’s probably not what you think…)

I have to admit, I’ve never really been a fan of Valentine’s Day.

Yes the gifts and fancy dinners are nice, but I feel like you should show your other half love on a daily basis. Not just pour it on thick once a year!

I’ve been married for 8 years this June and my idea of romance has definitely changed!

So when Mike asked “What do you want for Valentine’s Day? ”

I can definitely think of a few things!

  • Put the toilet paper roll on the actual holder and not just on the counter.
  • While I’m definitely impressed by your amazing dish balancing skills in the sink, how about loading the dishwasher?
  • Don’t run away to do “something” when you notice Emilia red faced grunting in the corner. How about you take care of this “special” package.
  • Take over home work duty (I I I I I i i i i i im losing my mind…)
  • Pick up the laundry off the floor and kindly place it in the basket 2 inches beside it.
  • Please refrain from rolling your eyes when I want to watch 2 hours of COPS . I like it and if that’s wrong I don’t want to be right!
  • Complement my car karaoke. I know it might not be great, but Frankie says I’m a good singer!
  • Buy me something from Victoria’s Secret (you know what I like… those two piece button up flannel pjs… Rawr!)
  • Commend my amazing achievements in fitted bedsheet folding! (Thanks Pinterest!)
  • Speaking of Pinterest, look at everything I show you when I’m browsing and enthusiastically agree with me when I say I’m going to do that project next! (I won’t….. Well I might…no, no I won’t..)

If you do these things I’m guaranteed to have a fantastic day full of love!

(I’ll also take that chocolate you were planning on buying, I love chocolate!)

Happy Valentines Day!

Wishing you lots of love on that day and everyday that follows!

“The Bad Person….”

“Mom, today we had a lockdown!”

(My blood runs cold, I can’t hear anything, I’m literally frozen!)

Me: “You what?”
Frankie ” Ya we practiced, what to do if a bad person came!”

(Ok, now I can breath again..)

He then proceeded to show me how they were told to get into their cubby, sit crossed legged and be very quiet!

“The teacher turns off the lights and locks the door! If the bad person looks into the room they won’t see us!” I guess in light of recent events it was time to review these procedures.

The Bad Person….

Growing up in school we regularly had fire drills, when I was Frankie’s age they really gave me a lot of anxiety. I knew they were just practice and I was safe but they still freaked me out!

I know shootings and abductions still happened back then, For the most part we were pretty sheltered from it. In elementary school my biggest fear was getting lice!
(Seriously, my hair was the same then at it is now and that nit comb really hurts! Also there was now way I was chopping off my hair! Are you crazy!!)

After becoming a mother, I turned into the most paranoid person you’ve ever met! Every stranger was a threat to my family. I would stare down anyone who even looked at my child.

Neither of my children went to daycare, I was blessed to be able to stay home and care for them. When the day came for Frankie to start school, every worst case scenario ran through my head. Every news story of a lost child, school shooting, bus crash you name it I thought about it!

The world has changed so much since I was younger, it’s still changing everyday! All you have to do is turn on the news every night for your proof. Kids can’t be as sheltered as we once were.

While it sickens me to think of why there is a need for these lockdown drills, I’m so thankful they exist!

Although, thankfully  he doesn’t seem to give the drills a second thought.

I wish he went to school in a world where his biggest concern was who he’ll be playing with at recess, instead of learning what to do if The bad person comes.

I know I might sound delusional, but I wish the world was simpler. I wish the light of many could drown out the darkness of a few. I choose to believe that we can help those in need and put a stop to the horrible things going on in cities and towns just like mine.

For the sake of our children

A Walk Down Memory Lane + Giveaway!

When I first started using Facebook, I would just add anyone who I had ever met. “Oh hey I met you for 5 minutes, add me on Facebook!”

As I got older, I found I wanted to weed out those people I really didn’t care about. ( it sounds harsh I know!) I wanted to keep up to date with the people I actually knew, the ones I shared memories with throughout the years.

It’s amazing to see how much people change over the years. They grow up, have kids, and sometimes they stay exactly how they’ve always been…..

When I was in grade 6 I moved to a new town, had to start over and make new friends. (For a 12 year old this is the end of the world!!)  It was an amazing new school filled with a lot of great kids, who I became friends with. Sadly I’ve lost touch with many of those people.

One that I never really lost touch with was Susie. All throughout high school we remained friends. Even after, we would randomly check in with each other bringing up a random memory, or funny story that had made us think of the other.

That’s us! top: Our grade 8 grad bottom: Our Prom

(It needs to be said, we’ve both come out of our awkward stages with flying colours! Ha ha! Don’t kill me Susie!)

These days we’re both mothers, and both starting out on new endeavours and adventures. Me with my blog and Susie with her business Baby Boards And More. Check out her page here: https://www.facebook.com/BabyBoardsandMore

She creates amazing party decor, baby statboards, invitations and pretty much anything you can think of! If you have an idea she’ll make it come to life!

I’ll let Susie tell you a little about herself:

My name is Susie and I am a single mom of a beautiful little 2 year old rascal named Mason. I live in Whitby Ontario and have my entire life. I started this little business just over a year and a half ago while on maternity leave. I wanted a creative gift to make some new moms for Christmas and this is where everything started.

Birth Stats are an important part of any child’s life and I enjoy putting smiles on those parents faces when they see the final product.

I also offer chalk-like birthday boards along with custom decorations, home decor boards and even a few speciality items.

This is a very small example of the things Susie has created!

I love supporting small local shops that offer new and creative products, When they are run by a friend that’s even better!!

Susie and I have teamed up to offer my readers a great giveaway!

One lucky winner will receive an 8.5 x 11 chalk like stat board! Head over to https://www.facebook.com/Thehungryhomemakerblog for all the details!

Winner will be announced Monday July 6th!

OURS By Cheryl Hickey Product review and giveaway!

As soon as I first discovered OURS I was immediately drawn in by one of their slogans, “Safe enough to use on little ones, but luxurious enough to pamper moms.” The second thing that caught my eye was the beautiful packaging!  It looks fresh and clean and I would later come to find that it is a perfect representation of the product inside!

Being a mom of little ones I’m always looking for safe and natural products to use on them. Frankie has suffered from eczema since the age of 3 months and sometimes products can make it flare up. Watching him have those painful rashes is heartbreaking. I decided to give these a try on not only him but me in hope of finally finding a product we could stick with!

OURS is made in Canada and the brainchild of Entertainment Tonight Canada Host Cheryl Hickey. Cheryl’s a proud mother of 2 and designed the line with her little ones in mind, but made sure the products are luxurious enough for women to enjoy. These products are exclusive to Rexall pharmacy locations and very reasonably priced.

The line is free of:

  • Phthalates
  • Silicone
  • Parabens
  • Gluten
  • Alcohol
  • Petrochemical
  • Mineral oil
  • Dyes
  • Most common allergens

It is also cruelty free and only contains natural fragrance.

The amazing people at OURS by Cheryl Hickey were so kind to send my mothers and I a beautiful gift bag for Mother’s Day and included three of their products. I have been using them and wanted to share a little info about each product along with my reviews!

3 in one hydrating oil

  • Avocado oil to moisturize
  • Camelia seed oil to rejuvenate
  • Lavender oil to sooth

When I first saw this oil, I was thinking greasy. This oil is not like others I’ve used before.

There is no greasy residue left on your skin, this stuff melts right into your skin and the natural oils give your skin a dewy glow. It can be used all over your skin and is even suggest for use on split ends or as an all over dry hair treatment!

I used this treatment in a few ways. I put a few drops into bath water to give myself a little extra moisture. The winter months are terrible to my skin and I was in desperate need of some moisture.

The light fresh scent was great! More often than not products come with that heavy perfume scent that over powers, and in my case usually causes me to get sick of them very quickly.

I also used the oil while blow drying my hair. I applied a little to the ends then blow dried as usual. It made my ends smoother and shinier! ( check out my Instagram to see my great hair lol!)

A little goes a long way, so this product will last you a while. Definitely going to be a must have for me in the coming months to help me get summer ready!

Face & Body Exfoliator

  • Shea and cocoa butter to moisturize
  • Green tea extract to refresh
  • Cucumber and Aloe to sooth

I looooove exfoliating scrubs! With my dry skin it’s a necessity!

This scrub has that same fresh clean scent!

(I’ll start sounding like a broken record soon but it’s true!)

There’s been a lot of health and environmental concerns about exfoliating scrubs. They usually contain microbeads that are not only damaging to our skin but also terrible for our environment once they get washed down the drain.

This scrub contains jojoba beads that are gentle enough for daily use, but still give your skin that fresh clean feeling that other exfoliators provide.  This one is another one I’ll keep on hand to get my skin summer ready, Mike even stole it ,used it and loved it! ( but you didn’t hear that from me, ha!)

EveryBody Lotion

  • Grapefruit, Pineapple and Mandarin oil to protect
  •  Coconut and olive oil to hydrate
  • Cucumber and Aloe extract to sooth
  • Lavender to soften
  • Bergamot to heal

Ok, this one! All I can say is YES!!!

This moisturizer is amazing. Not greasy and no overpowering scent!

I use this daily for both Frankie and myself. Frankie’s skin is great, no reactions and even soothing the bit of an outbreak he had before!

I’ll be keeping this lotion on hand all year round!  I apply right out of the shower to lock in all of that moisture. It leaves my skin feeling soft and fresh.

All in all this line is great, I can’t wait to try more products! This little sample definitely left me wanting more!

I know what you’re thinking, you want to try them too! I don’t blame you. The amazing people with OURS thought you might feel that way.

So we’ve teamed up to offer a Mother’s Day Giveaway!

You’ll win all three of these full sized products

Candy Free Easter Basket Ideas

Ok, yes I’m doing it again!

I did it for Valentine’s Day now I’m doing it for Easter!

All of the kids in our family get showered with candy at Easter. All of the aunts, uncles and grandparents get the kids chocolates.

Then they get to do their Egg hunt and guess what….. More candy!!

Last year I suggested we fill the eggs with some all natural fruit snack I found. After noticing all of the dirty looks I was getting, I got the hint… no one was on board with that idea lol!

We try to limit the candy The Easter Bunny leaves at our house because of the inevitable candy avalanche that is to come later in the day!

This year we have the extra challenge of making an Easter basket for Emilia who will only be 5 months old at Easter. At Frankie’s first Easter he was 9 months old so we could include edible treats, no such luck this time!

For Emilia we bought just a few things:

Hair accessories, teether, a pair of shoes, a rattle, a stuffed lamb and a little windup chick! (I couldn’t resist!)

Frankie’s basket was much easier, also Mike helped with his. That’s why you’ll notice the abundance of chocolate and candy in this one…..

For Frankie’s basket besides the candy we bought him:

A paintable bunny mask, bunny straws, paintable Easter magnets, a tic tac toe game, Easter slinkies, hopping frogs and a pack of markers.

Here is a list of some more things to add into your little ones Easter basket this year!

  • Bubbles
  • Bunny Ears
  • Activity books
  • Bath toys
  • Play doh
  • Sunglasses
  • Sippy cups
  • Crayons
  • Playing cards
  • Board books
  • Nail polish
  • Puzzles
  • Beach toys
  • Jump rope
  • Rattles
  • Kite
  • Pjs
  • Bouncy balls
  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Stickers
  • Stamp set
  • Headband/hat
  • Fun socks
  • Finger paint
  • Easter plate and cup
  • Finger puppets
  • Water gun
  • Toy cars

I hope I’ve helped all you parents with some fun new ideas for Easter this year!  Any other ideas you’d like to share? I would love to hear them!

Liebster Award!

Yesterday the lovely holly from http://hollyshousewifelife.blogspot.ca/ awarded me the Liebster award!

I was so excited, so happy, so honered, so ……. Confused! Ha ha!

Being a newbie blogger I didn’t know what this involved, so I did some digging online.

What I found was that this is a blogging award going around that’s about showing some love to some of your newer favourite blogs, while getting to know them better.

 There are a few rules to this;

You thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog.

Answer the 10 questions about yourself.

Nominate other bloggers for the award that have fewer than 2000 followers.

Let the nominees know that they have been nominated by posting links to their blogs in your blog post.

 So here we go!

1.How did you get the name for your blog?

I was trying to think of something catchy, something that reflects my life.

Unfortunately  Pj wearing, messy haired, sleep deprived  stay at home mommy that likes to eat snacks didn’t really have a good ring to it,

so……. The hungry homemaker was a close second place!

2.Why did you start blogging ?

I love cooking baking and sharing recipes. After becoming a mommy I spend my days being subject to the weird things my son says and does.

I would constantly post quotes and and pictures of the crazy things he did on Facebook, and many people suggested I start a blog sharing his daily antics. I also thought of it as something to do for myself, a way of getting some me time.

While Hiding from my crazy family…. Just kidding…. Sometimes.

 3.What is your favourite food?

I love all food, honestly it’s hard to choose just one. If I had to I would have to say sushi. When we go to an all you can eat sushi restaurant you better believe I get my money worth!

4.What do you like to do in your spare time.

Spare time… spare time? I remember those days……

Nowadays spare time comes pretty rarely.

When I do get it, I like to read, catch up on some of my favourite shows, actually engage in adult conversation and find out what is going on in the world.

(Besides the super exciting daily lives of the residents of Sesame Street I’m really out of the loop)

 5. What is your dream vacation spot?

Somewhere tropical is always a safe choice, but if I really think about it I would want to go back to Italy. I was 13 the last time I visited. I have family there I haven’t seen in many years.

My grandmother, Aunt and cousins are there who my children have never met. I wouldn’t hesitate to take another trip there.

It’s a beautiful place where I made many memories that I hold close to my heart and I would love for my children to have the same opportunity.

 6. Are you a cat or dog person

Dog person all the way. Reason being I grew up around dogs, and cat hair makes me swell up like a balloon and almost die so……….

 7. Where do you see yourself in 50 years?

In fifty years I see my self as the crazy old grandma with big hair, who speaks her mind and wears a lot of animal print!

So kind of like now just with wrinkles ha!

By that time I’ll be 80,’I would want to be able to spend time with my children and hopefully grandchildren passing down family traditions and stories.

I pray to be happy and healthy and enjoy my golden years surrounded by family and some doctors who are really good at Botox!

 8. Do you like meeting new people?

In truth, I do and I don’t. I’m a pretty shy person who won’t initiate conversation, but I’ll talk up a storm if someone starts a conversation with me.

I’ve been told sooooo many times before “I thought you would be such a “b” before I met you” thanks resting b****face!

I suffer from mild social anxiety and while I would love to be that outgoing person that I want to be, I’m always questioning myself and worrying about others opinions of me. Even blogging and sharing myself in that way was a big thing for me.

 9. What is the best gift you’ve ever received?

The first thing that comes to mind is of course my children, they are all I’ve every wanted and I love them more than anything!

I know, I know que the “Awwwwwwwws.”

If I had to choose a material thing, it would be the tickets to the Madonna concert Mike got me last year because, HELLO!! Madonna!

 10. If you had one wish what would it be?

The one thing I would wish for would be for all of my family and friends to be happy and healthy!

Also jewels lots and lots of jewels,

but mostly everyone happy and healthy….

So there you go, a little more about me!

Now I nominate these bloggers who I enjoy reading  about and following on Instagram.

Have fun!

Be My (non candy) Valentine!

With next week being Valentines day, our family did our usual trip over to Target to let Frankie pick out his valentines. Even though he isn’t in school until next year, he loves handing them out to our family and friends!

With his first year of school coming so quickly, it got me thinking about next year, and what fun things we could create at home for Frankie to hand out to his classmates. So off to Pinterest I went!

Valentines Day is usually a day filled with chocolates and candy. I know some schools and frown upon bringing non healthy treats to school and I’m sure other parents would appreciate them getting less sweets to add to that inevitable high that always seems to follow! (Myself included!)

Back to blogging!

Wow, time has really flown by!

It`s been almost a year since my last post. I stopped posting right after we discovered we were expecting baby #2!
Between the excitement of finding out a new little one was on it’s way, the nausea, running after a 2 year old, the nausea, doctors appointments and did I mention the nausea? It was hard to actually find time to sit down and have energy to blog.

I made a promise to myself that I would take some me time in the new year and would dedicate some of that to this blog!

I’m coming back with more recipes, crafts and stories from my life as a mommy of 2!
I hope you will all enjoy reading as much as I will enjoy posting, I’m excited to get back into blogging and can’t wait for all of the fun to come!

I figured I would show you a little of what has gone on since I’ve been gone in my next few posts.
I’ll post about our newest addition, our big boy turning 3 and his super cool Lego party with a look back on his past parties. Some of the yummy things we’ve created in the kitchen and some crazy stories from our daily lives!

I’m sorry I’ve been gone for so long, but I’m back to work blogging which will hopefully include a blog facelift!

Thanks for sticking with me,

The best pie I’ve ever tasted! (plus a mini bday recap)

For months I’ve spent many minutes drooling over the cookies on the Instagram page of Moo Milk Bar.

I am a huge milk and cookies person, literally every evening is ended with a big glass of milk and a delicious cookie!
So when I discovered this place, it seemed like it was made for me!
They have the most delicious looking cookies, all 15 varieties look amazing!

One glorious day I saw that they also made pies! I saw the ricotta and Nutella pie, two of my most favorite things together in one pie!
I decided at that moment I must have it!

Time passed and I never got the chance to make it to their location to give it a try.
I decided that I wanted it to be my “birthday cake”.
They usually do not make pies at this time of year but they made an exception. (Thank you!!!)
I can’t tell you how happy it made me, or how excited I was knowing that I would finally get to enjoy this delicious looking pie! I was like a little kid on Christmas morning!!

It did not dissapoint!
It was amazing. So creamy, so delicious and everyone loved it!
I can honestly say it was one of the best dessert I’ve ever had!
I want to thank Moo Milk Bar for making my birthday end on the sweetest note possible!

So yummy!

Loved it!

If anyone lives in the Toronto area please do yourself a favor and stop into Moo Milk Bar to pick up a little treat! Check out their website for their full menu, address and catering options! http://www.moomilkbar.ca

My delicious pie ended a day that begun with a special delivery of breakfast in bed, along with a beautiful picture!

Then I headed out with these crazy guys for some lunch and target shopping! (my weakness!)

When I blew out the candles I honestly couldn’t wish for more. Surrounded by my guys, parents, sisters, neice, nephew and my Inlaws. The best part of the day was knowing I had so many people surrounding me that love me! Who could wish for more?
